Peel and Stick Film Installation

Install cabinet box film in seven steps

A roll of Qwikkit peel and stick cabinet film partly unrolled

Qwikkit peel and stick film covers cabinet boxes and frames to match your new doors. With a little prep, one person can apply it cleanly. Here is how.

What you need

Tools

  • Utility knife
  • Putty knife
  • 4 inch smoothing tool
  • Ceramic edge trimmer (optional)

Supplies

  • Putty
  • Sanding block
  • Rags

Installation steps

  1. Unroll the film and lay it flat for 24 hours before you install it.
  2. Clean and prep the cabinets. Surface flaws show through the film, so fill holes and sand rough spots smooth. If the surface is greasy or oily, wipe it with a cleaner or degreaser first.
  3. Rough cut each piece to size and dry fit it before you remove the backer.
  4. Wipe the surface with a damp rag. That bit of moisture lets you slide the film into place for a short time after you apply it.
  5. Remove 3 to 6 inches of the backer at a time while you press the film onto the surface.
  6. Use a squeegee to push out air pockets and bubbles. If the film lands in the wrong spot, move it right away. The adhesive is strong and gets harder to remove as time passes.
  7. Trim the excess film with a utility knife or a ceramic edge trimmer. Go slow for a clean edge.

Common questions

What surfaces is the film for?

The film covers cabinet boxes and frames. It matches your new Qwikkit doors and fronts, so the whole kitchen looks like one finish.

Do I need to prep the cabinets first?

Yes. Fill any holes and sand rough spots smooth, because flaws show through the film. Wipe greasy or oily surfaces with a cleaner or degreaser before you start.

Can I reposition the film after it touches the surface?

For a short time, yes. Wiping the surface with a damp rag first gives you a little room to slide the film into place. The adhesive is strong, so set each piece with care.

How long should the film sit before I install it?

Unroll it and let it lay flat for 24 hours. That relaxes the film so it lies down clean and even.

What colors does the film come in?

The film comes in select colors that match Qwikkit doors. The Peel and Stick Film Specification Guide lists every color and the roll sizes.
